Club News & Announcements - Oct 18

Well it has been a busy couple of weeks!

Today we hosted our District Governor Barbara Redder and heard from her about the larger RI world with regard to district and Rotary International goals and initiatives.  Points that really struck me:

Rotary clubs around the world are adapting to different needs in their communities both the kinds or services they choose provide but also in how they structure their clubs.

Polio Plus is still very important as there are two countries where the disease has not be been eradicated and unfortunately, one country where it has re-appeared.  RI has provided an emergency 500K grant to attack the re-emergent virus in Africa and it is hoped that a crash program of vaccines will take care of it.  RI has challenged clubs around the world to donate $26.50 per member (the amount that the RI foundation was started with 100 years ago!) to combat the disease.  Our board will take up this subject at our next meeting in November.

Jackie Brown received her first Paul Harris Fellow Award from DG Redder at the meeting.

At our recent board meeting we approved new member applications for Steve Zarlengo and Brian Small and resignations for Jackie Brown and Suzie Hawkins.

Ashley Kane was appointed to fulfill the board term vacated by Jackie. We are sorry to lose Jackie but welcome Ashley to the board.

Ellen Kendall reported on the progress of the Nominating Committee in seeking new board members and officers for the coming rotary year.  The vacancies are:

            4 regular board seats               (two year term)

            Treasurer                                 (traditionally a 3 year position but varies)

            President Elect 2017/2018      (President in 2018-2019)

We completed our three weeks of political forums.  Much thanks to Geneva Taylor for her work in putting this together!

Scott Marr presented information to the club about our effort to reach our local foundation goal of 500K and the matching recognition available to members who choose make a contribution during October to help put us over the bar.  Members who contribute up to $500 will receive matching recognition towards Jack Black Fellowship and the club will contribute those matching funds to the foundation.

Eric Rabesa and Gillian Morris were named Rotarians of the month and 100 Paul Harris points will be awarded to each of them.  Congratulations!

Our meeting next week is at Centennial Hall followed by lunch at the Smokehouse.
