Club notes - wrapping up 2012.
Happy New Year!
After a two week break for the Holidays, the club will meet on January 8th at the Sweetwater Grill on Yampa Street. We’ll be back at the Steamboat Grand for our meeting on the 15th.
Our December 11th Holiday party at McKnights was a ton of fun, with lots of Rotarians and their spouses/significant others in attendance. The food was excellent and the conversations were merry. Thanks to Alice Klauzer, Jane Denning and Kerry Shea for organizing the party.
The Community Holiday Wishes Party at Howelsen Hill on December 16th was extraordinary, with tubing, singing, warming fires, Santa, cookies, hot chocolate, many, many gifts, and hundreds of community members in attendance. Through the community wishes program, we assisted in the purchase of over 1,200 gifts for 95 different families in the United Way’s Christmas Wishes program. Huge thanks and kudos to each member of the committee (Eric Gripentroeg, Eric Rabesa, David Lamb, Rex Brice, and Grant Fenton) and all of the volunteers for pulling off this epic event in its first year. Many thanks also to the Young Professionals Network, City of Steamboat Springs, Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, United Way, Steamboat Springs Firefighters, and the Steamboat Restaurant Group for their partnership on this event – we couldn’t have done it without you!
At our meeting on December 18th, Jim Steinberg provided the thought for the day, Angela Catterson and Scott Marr served as greeters, Brian Harvey was our Good News Guy, and the club recognized club membership anniversaries for Jack Morrison (34 years), David Zabel (20 years), Angela Catterson (9 years), Scott Marr (9 years) and Bob Scott in song. With bells ringing, Jim Nowak and Larry Covillo were recognized for their 24 and 19 years in organizing the bell ringing. Many thanks to Jim and Larry for their long standing commitment and contributions to the club and to bell ringing.
The club noted the contributions of Don Lufkin to the club, heard from several Fall Grant Round recipients introduced by Jane Toothaker, and recognized the excellent work of the Community Holiday Wishes committee. Many members spoke about the event during Good News. The club voted to accept the proposed board slate. Jane Denning and Mike Roberts provided an overview of the new member party to be held at Rex’s on the night of January 22nd, in lieu of a meeting on that night. Diana, our exchange student from Mexico, was in attendance with her new host dad, Roger Goode. Many thanks to the Goode family for serving as a host for Diana, who injured her knee, so is out for the season. If you are planning a non-skiing activity, please invite her along.
Our program on the 18th focused on Crutches For Africa – which is a program that collects donations of crutches in the US and then distributes them in Africa. Our club will be supporting and partaking in this program though the hard work and efforts of Leslie Gamel, Ellen Kendall, Paul Hebert and Mayling Hebert. We will hear more about this program in January.
