ANNOUNCEMENTS:

 

Report from April Board Meeting:  We accepted with regret the resignations of two Rotarians, Tracy Barnett and Mike Schlichtman.  Both will be missed and we hope they will visit when in town.  Leave of Absences were granted to Kristal Eckley (3 months) and Michael Van Vliet (2 months.)  We also approved several motions that resulted from the work and recommendations of the Foundation/Giving Task Force.   These can be seen on Club Runner, under organization-committees-board of directors-documents.

 

Rotary Direct:  If you would like to do online contributions for the RI Foundation, let Ellen know.  We are trying it out with several members to see how efficient it is.

 

Foundation/Giving Task Force:  Many thanks to Steve Hitchcock as Chair and the committee of Steve Sehnert, Eric Griepentrog, Sharon Mensing, Scott Marr, Angela Catterson, Greg Stetman and John Centner for their thorough work on this task force. Their recommendations were passed by the Board on Monday.

 

Grants Committee:  Thanks to Jeremy Behling, Chair and the committee of Geneva Taylor, Todd Hayes, Steve Hitchcock, Steve Frasier, Cam Boyd, Tara Weaver, and Dan Bonner for their thoughtful deliberation in awarding the 2nd cycle of grants ($8,000) from total grant awards of $15,000 for this year.  A job well done!  Recipients will be notified in a couple weeks.  

 

Ski Town Classic:  Jackie Brown, Chair of Ski Town Classic Committee, asked us to Save the Dates:  June 10 – 11th and explained the new aspects (one day of golf, reception on Saturday at Strings with a live auction and cash raffle. Legal Tender will be entertainment.)  And Ashley Kane and Scott Marr encouraged us to get our hole sponsorships reserved soon!  This is one of our “all hands on deck” fundraisers, so please plan on volunteering and attending!

 

Crutches4Africa Drive – Rachelle Summers and Ian Engle, Co-Chairs asked us to Save the Date for the first weekend in May (5,6,7) for this very important service project.   ALL mobility devices are greatly appreciated!  Look in your closets for crutches, braces, ski poles and be on the look out for wheel chairs, walkers, baby joggers and strollers, bike trailers.  Per our program with Dave Talbot, founder of Crutches4Africa, we know this is a project which directly aids hundreds of polio victims and other victims of paralysis.  Dave personally oversees the distribution of items and will be here in Steamboat to help us with the drive. Posters and flyers will be available soon.

 

Vocation-Rotation  - June 7 – Steve Sehnert, Program Chair, asked for volunteer host businesses for this “field trip” meeting and already has several locations.   He has room for a couple more locations, if anyone would like to host 8 – 10 Rotarians in your place of business where you can really “show off” what you and your business does!  Let Steve know if you would like to be added to the list.

 

District Conference:  It’s not too late to register for the conference in Jackson Hole – 5 Rotarians going so far!  May 19-21.

Student of the Month:  Another wonderful student, Jordi Floyd, from Steamboat Springs High School was introduced by PJ Wharton and honored as April’s Student of the Month.  We were delighted to have her parents join us and congratulate Jordi for her many accomplishments and obviously wonderful character!

 

Jack Black Fellow Award – Scott Marr presented Paul Hebert (who was absent last week) with his award certificate for his $1,000 contribution to our Rotary Club of Steamboat Springs Endowment.  Congratulations Paul!

 

Rotarian of the Month of March – Kerry Shea.   Our Board of Directors voted to recognize Kerry for his impactful and inspirational work with the youth hockey program.   We have heard many accolades about Kerry’s work with so many kids and we congratulate him for being a model of Rotarian leadership in our community!    

 

PROGRAM:   CEO:  Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities.   Tara Weaver, Ed MacArthur and Rich Lowe introduced us to a new unique and exciting program for high school students.  The program was started in a small town, Effingham, IL.   It has now expanded to 29 classes in other locations.   Steamboat Springs is number 30 and the first in Colorado to offer this exceptional and highly successful program to 18 students from SSHS, Soroco HS, Hayden HS and Yampa Valley HS.   Students learn directly from business leaders in our community and visit a host of businesses – learning skills to create a business plan and potentially operate their own business.   They also learn skills on how to behave responsibly and with maturity in the workplace.  The program already has 54 local business sponsors, 28 mentors, 23 business tours and 46 guest speakers lined up in support of the program to begin this fall!   As we listened to a few videos from current graduates of the program, it was clear that we are fortunate to have something so extraordinary in our community.  For further information:   www.ceo.org 

 

GOOD NEWS:  Thank you to Winnie Delliquadri for doing Good News, highlighted by Ian Engle’s (“I’m getting my birthday money fill”) expressions about happiness (a chance encounter with a stranger) and gratitude (for a visit from Michigan relatives)
