FOR THOSE ROTARIANS WHO MISSED THE MEETING ON TUESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2014

We had a busy meeting on Tuesday, December 9, 2014.

First, we recognized Club Membership Anniversaries: Joan Lazarus, (1 yr.), Jack Morrison (36 Yrs.), David Scully (2 Yrs.), Dave Zabel (22 Yrs.), Ange Catterson (11 Yrs.) and Scott Marr (11 Yrs.)

                Rachelle Summers and Matt Lieven served as our Greeters. Rachelle also introduced our guests and visiting Rotarians. Thank you, Rachelle and Matt.

                Thought for the Day was delivered by Alice Klauzer. Thank you, Alice, for the series of quotes you shared on “service,” very appropriate for a Rotary Club. We need more TFD volunteers. Please contact Alice.       

                Our Student of the Month was Andrea Clark from the Christian Heritage School. Dan Callahan shared all Andrea’s accomplishments which led to her being chosen as our Student of the Month. Andrea’s parents and a representative from the Christian Heritage School were on hand for the Award. Congratulations Andrea and best wishes for your continued success, you have a very bright future ahead of you.

                We added two new members to our ranks! Welcome, New Member Inductees, Dillon Fulcher and Tony Counts. We are glad to have you with us. Sponsors, for Tony are Paula Cooper Black and Brian Harvey. Lynaia South and yours’ truly served as Sponsors for Dillon Fulcher. A big thank you to Ellen Kendall and the Membership Committee for bringing us: “The best members ever.”

                John Holloway will Chair a committee to recommend to the Board of Directors (“BOD”) an appropriate recognition at the Rotary Peace Pavilion for our departed friend, and fellow Rotarian, Michael Roberts. Please contact John if you are willing to participate in this very worthwhile endeavor.

                In that same vein, Past District Governor and Past Club President, Mike Forney, requested a committee be formed to showcase our Rotary Peace Pavilion at the “World Café” during the District 5440 Conference in Ft. Collins, CO., this June. Please let me know if you are interested in working on this project.

                It would be appreciated if our Rotary Club would again participate by entering a team in the Healthcare Foundation for the Yampa Valley’s (“HFYV”), “Penguin Plunge” in March, 2015. We have entered teams in the past, and they have done quite well in the judging. Please let me know if you are interested in getting involved in this very worthwhile Community project.

                Ian Engle, Eric Rabesa, Eric Griepentrog, and the remainder of the Community Holiday Tubing Party are looking for volunteers to help put on this event. I have signed up – have you?

                Classification Talks, easily one of our favorite Programs, maintained the tradition. We so much enjoyed Joan Lazarus’ presentation using slides and video of her artistic career. Joan ended her presentation with two dance videos. The second video was a Hawaiian Hula Troupe (?), dancing to Roberta Flack’s 1972 # 1 hit: “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” Well done, Joan! Does anyone know who Roberta was thinking about in that song? Answer, below.

                Using just the podium and his Irish story-telling ability, Mark Fitzgerald delivered a very entertaining Classification Talk and we got to know Mark better. Mark was accompanied by his wife, Dana and his mother-in-law, who were referenced frequently during Mark’s presentation.

Joan and Mark used two distinctly different styles of presentation, and both were creative and so effective. Joan and Mark then ransomed their regular member badges from Good News, as always, so capably handled by Brian Harvey. Good News netted $295.00.

                Chair of the Nominating Committee and immediate Club Past President, Scott Marr, announced the 2015-2016 Slate, President Elect – Steve Hitchcock, Directors for two year terms: Lynaia South, John Kuhn, Eric Rabesa and Tara Weaver. Our Club Officers and Board of Directors, will be rounded out with: Ellen Kendall, who will serve as Club President, Jim Moylan will serve as Immediate Past President, Jackie Brown will continue to serve as Secretary and Randy Rudasics will remain as Treasurer. Directors in the second year of their two year terms are: Sharon Mensing, Brian Harvey, Steve Sehnert and Eric Griepentrog. The slate will be voted upon by the Club Membership at an upcoming meeting.

                We are forming an Ad Hoc Task Force Committee to address concerns about the continuation of the Ski Town Golf Classic in its present or a modified form. This is one of our biggest fund-raisers and we need to be very serious about it. The committee is meeting at 4:00 pm on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at the STARS Office on the “garage level” in The Sheraton. We need input and expertise! Please attend if you are able to contribute.

                Tuesday, December 16, 2014 – No Noon Meeting. Holiday Season Caroling and Singing at Casey’s Pond – Noon – touch base with Debbie Aragon. Club Holiday Party – 5:00 pm - Schmiggity’s.

                Tuesday, December 23, 2014 – Kid’s Luncheon – Noon at: “The Grand.”

                No Noon Meeting on Tuesday, December 30, 2014. We may hold an optional meeting, perhaps, at Butcherknife Brewery, circa 5:00 pm, subject to confirmation.

                Attendance: 73%

                Answer: My original understanding was that Roberta Flack was referring to her mother in: “The “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” I thought I better check before I conveyed that information. According to Wikipedia, she was referring to her cat, Sancho Panza that had recently died. (By the way, the song was written in 1957 by British song-writer, Ewan MacColl. Roberta more than doubled the time to sing the song in her hit version.)

                It pays to: “fact-check” and verify.
