May meeting notes
It’s been a busy several weeks in Steamboat Springs! If you haven’t ordered your flower barrels and hanging flower baskets yet, please do so soon as they get delivered on June 11! We won’t have a lunch meeting that Tuesday, and instead will meet at the rodeo grounds to deliver flowers, followed by a family friendly BBQ. (as in, bring your family.)
The Ski Town Golf Classic is also coming up quickly! Get psyched as this will be a great event – and the auction will be better than ever.
May has been a very busy month. Many thanks to all of the club members who have volunteered on events this month– which include Dictionaries, 4 Way Test in the Schools, Purple Pinky Day, Clean up and repair of Rotary Park, the Youth Exchange International Dinner, the Interact Shelter Box project, Flower Barrels, the District Conference and the Ski Town Golf Classic.
Finally, a recap of the last several meetings: On May 21, Jenny Wall provided an impromptu thought for the day, Jeff Swoyer led us in song, Jim McCreight and Brad Meeks served as greeters, and Brian Harvey was our Good News guy. Zoe Hart, our May student of the month, and the first student of the month from Soroco High School, was introduced to the club, the club formally thanked Bill Kennedy for his service to the club and his work as treasurer for several years, and Scott Marr was recognized as Rotarian of the Month for May for all of his work on the upcoming District Conference. The program focused on the District Conference – which is coming up next week and will be great.
On May 14, Steve Frasier provided the thought for the day, Dan Hagney and Coleman Cook served as our greeters, Kris Hammond was our good news guy, and the club sang a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday to Ellen Kendall, as she was the only May birthday person in attendance. Happy Birthday shout outs to Jim Steinberg, Paul Hebert and Dan Callahan for their big days this month. The program was Don Day, a Rotarian and meteorologist, who worked on the Stratos project, which was a crazy project sponsored by red bull to carry a skydiver up to the upper stratosphere and then have him skydive down to earth. The project was a success, resulted in a world record jump from a crazy high up distance, and resulted in a human breaking the sound barrier. It was an extremely interesting talk – with lots of photos and information about what went into the project.
On May 7 the club met at theSweetwater Grill for a club day which included Mignon Stetman bringing the club up to speed on the upcoming Ski Town Golf Classic. The event will be amazing! Cole Miller from the Hayden High School was recognized as student of the month for April, Debbie Aragon provided the thought for the day and served as our good news guru, Lynna Broyles and Dave Wittlinger served as greeters, and the club sang “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” to Rotarians celebrating anniversaries within the club this month: Meg Boyer (1 year), Suzanne Schlicht (20 years), Rex Brice (8 years), Brad Price (2 years), PJ Wharton (9 years), and Karl Bunker (8 years).
On April 30, Matt Lieven provided our thought for the day, Ashley Kane led us in song, Jane Denning and Karl Bunker served as greeters, and Brian Harvey was our good news guy. Our program was provided by Brad Meeks and included not only an update on the Steamboat Springs School District, but also a neat interactive session that had Rotarians providing opinions on various questions.
