A fun meeting today! Jeremy Behling and Tracy Barnett served as our greeters, Jeff Steinke provided a thought for the day, Kerry Shea led us in song, and Kris Hammond conducted Good News. Also thanks to Tara Weaver for doing a great job filling in as Secretary. The program today was most excellent - Jimmy Westlake, Astronomy professor at CMC, provider of the astronomy series in the newspaper, and biker extraordinaire who biked from the South to Alaska (with his cat!), provided a wonderful program about astronomy - and more specifically Pluto, how it was demoted from planet status, and all of the other dwarf planets out there. Leslie Gamel took notes, which are in a separate story in the ebulletin and on the website.
Ellen Kendall reminded everyone that the Barn Dance is coming up on September 22 at Sydney Peak Ranch. The event will benefit the Boys and Girls Club (primary beneficiary) as well as Come Lets Dance (international beneficiary). The Barn Dance committee is still looking for sponsors of the event - sponsors are eligible for a state of Colorado child care tax credit for all sponsorship dollars - which offers a substantial tax credit value for the sponsorship donation. Please refer potential sponsors to Ellen Kendall and Tara Weaver.
Lynaia South noted that she was looking for rides for the two youth exchange students to the required orientation. Our club needs to get the students to Laramie this Friday, and then fetch them back again from Laramie on Sunday. Tracy Barnett volunteered for the Friday shift - if you can drive to Laramie to pick up the students on Sunday, please contact Lynaia.
Lynaia South was named as Rotarian of the Month for August for all of her work and dedication to the youth exchange program. She has worked tirelessly for many months to nominate our outbound students to the district, communicate with inbound students, recruit and orient host families, enroll the two inbound students in school, find counselors for each student, fill out mountains of paperwork, and arrange for each student to arrive in Steamboat Springs this week. Thank you Lynaia for making the youth exchange program a success!
Good News was $174 and Attendance was 61%.
