Meeting Notes - August 7, 2012

In our meeting, Tom Kern and Jane Denning served as greeters and Paul Hebert provided our thought for the day. The club celebrated August rotarian birthdays for Kris Hammond, Jane Toothaker, Geneva Taylor and Dave Zabel. Kerry Shea served as our Good News person with an orange hat charmed off of a visiting rotarian.
Scott Marr has been hard at work organizing the District Conference for next spring and announced that he will be looking for some key volunteers for the conference in the upcoming month or two. Please chat with Scott if you are interested in taking on a larger role with the conference.
Lynaia South has been putting in alot of extra hours getting ready for the exchange students - Diana from Mexico and Vini from Brazil - to arrive later this month. Lynaia announced that she is looking for one additional host family for either Diana or Vini - so if you are interested in more information or have a potential referral please contact Lynaia. Thanks to Lynaia for all her work, as well as to Tracy Barnett for serving as Diana's counselor and to Kris Hammond for serving as Vini's counselor. Also a big thanks to our host families - Rex Brice and Bettina Neset, Tracy and Cooper Barnett, Kevin and Kelly Kaminski, Randy and Kathy Nelson (outbound youth exchange student Hope Nelson's parents), and Roger and Lori Good.
Ellen Kendall and Tara Weaver (Congratulations Tara on your marriage and new last name!!!!) handed out Save the Date cards for the Barn Dance (September 22 from 5-9PM at Sidney Peak Ranch) and told us about this fun event which will include some amazing prize packages. Definitely plan on attending as it will be a great time and will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Steamboat Springs.
Anne Poirot - our youth exchange student last school year to Norway - provided the program for the day. Anne spoke in Norwegian (and English, thankfully) and told us about the language, food, customs and holidays in Norway, as well as her travels and experiences as a youth exchange student. She noted that the experience had made her a stronger individual who could able to adapt to almost any situation. She also noted that the experience really illustrated to her that the world was really a very small place and that she had much in common with people from all countries. Anne is headed to CU this fall and plans on working for the Peace Corps upon graduation. She thanked the club profusely for the experience of being a youth exchange student.
Good News was $202 and attendance was 68%.
