Meeting Notes - November 27, 2012
At our meeting last Tuesday it was great to see Brad Price serving as greeter, as Brad is recovering from recent back surgery. Debbie Aragon was a quick study with Thought For the Day, and Henry Evans led us in singing a Christmas carol. Jim McCreight was back in the club after taking a leave, and DG Mike Forney joined the club before heading off to do more district meetings. PJ Wharton introduced Jessica Wallace of SSHS as our student of the month, with parents Betsy Frick and David Wallace looking on. Holly Larson was named as Rotarian of the Month for November, and Brian Harvey was our Good News guy.
Mike Roberts reminded members that there will be no club meeting next week – instead the club will celebrate the holidays at McKnights from 5-8 pm. There’s still time to RSVP for yourself and a guest – just let Alice Klauzer know if you’ll be able to attend.
Holly Larsen passed around a sign up sheet for donations for gifts for Agua Prieta orphans. Several light years ago, our club used to give white elephant gifts at the club’s Holiday Party. In an effort to do something more meaningful than, say, give each other blow up dolls and whoopee cushions, we came up with the idea of using the same dollars to purchase necessities and toys for orphans in Agua Prieta. The Interact club members shop for the gifts and then help to deliver them. If you are in the position to contribute, just let Holly or Angela Catterson know the amount you’d like to donate and it will show up on your next bill from the club. All donations go directly to the purchase of gifts.
Erik Gripentroeg and his team brought us up to speed on the planning for the Community Holiday Wishes Party, which will be at Howelsen Hill from 4-7pm on Sunday, December 16. The party will feature Santa, sledding, hot cocoa and cookies, and will be an opportunity for club members and the community to join in the United Ways Christmas Wishes program. The party is FREE, and everyone is encouraged to attend, especially if they have children in tow, or just want to be around them for an hour or two. We’d also love for folks to join the club’s efforts to adopt 60 families through the United Way’s Christmas Wishes program. To participate – go to the website: www.CommunityHolidayWishes.com select a gift/recipient, write down the gift number, shop for the gift, (wrap it if you can), write the number on the gift, and bring it to the Community Holiday Wishes Party at Howelsen Hill. Many, many thanks to the Young Professionals Network, City of Steamboat Springs, Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, and United Way for their support of this great community event.
Our program featured Bryna Krauth, who brought us up to speed on the Casey’s Pond Assisted Living Center. Casey’s Pond will include an Independent living pod, complete with three restaurants, a fitness center, several multi-purpose rooms, and free transportation throughout the community, with special emphasis on the ski area in winter months for all the seniors who qualify for free skiing. Casey’s Pond will also have assisted living and memory care wings, as well as the Doak Walker House, with its skilled nursing. The entire facility will have fabulous programs (like Yoga and Tai Chi every morning), views of Casey’s pond, walking trails and gardens, and a dog run for pet lover.
