Meeting notes – January 29 and February 5, 2013
Happy February fellow rotarians! Here's hoping we have many snowy and sunny days ahead this winter, and that we all enjoy the 100th celebration of winter carnival, complete with what is supposed to be a not to be missed fireworks show Saturday night. The club continues to be busy doing great things in our community and across the globe. Here's a recap of our past two meetings:
In our meeting February 5th, Jackie Brown provided our thought for the day (which included the suggestion of a pajama party on the town), Tara Weaver and Gillian Morris served as our greeters, and Cam Boyd was our good news guru. As the 100th winter carnival is this week, during good news many rotarians noted their favorite parts of winter carnival and David Lamb provided an entertaining update as to how he went big at Howelsen Hill off the cat track and blew out his knee for the third time, all while still winning an informal big air contest. The club sang a rousing rendition of happy birthday to our fellow Rotarians celebrating February birthdays - Erik Griepentrog, Marion Kahn, Holly Larson, Jim Moylan, Mike Roberts, Mignon Stetman, Chris Taylor, Tara Weaver, and Jay Wetzler. Jackie Brown was inducted as a new member into the club with sponsors Jim Moylan and Alice Klauzer on hand – welcome Jackie! Nissa Parker, our new outbound exchange student, introduced herself and let us know that she was headed to Italy next year, and Ellen Kendall was recognized as the Rotarian of the Month for January. For our program, Kathy Connell, the Transportation Commissioner for Northwest Colorado, provided an overview of transportation matters, issues, funding, and funding shortfalls and its likely future impacts on transportation across the state.
In our January 29th meeting, Tracy Barnett provided our thought for the day, Karl Gills served as Greeter, and Kris Hammond was our good news guy. As several rotarians have just returned from delivering gifts to orphans in Agua Prieta, many of the good news comments focused on that trip and experience - which we'll hear more about in a future meeting. The club celebrated the birthdays of Rotarians born in January - Winnie DelliQuadri, Dave Wittlinger, Angela Catterson, Gillian Morris, Paxton Jones, Alfred Kahn, Suzanne Schlicht, and Tom Kern. Shealie Jenkins from Heritage Christian School was recognized as Student of the Month for January, Jane Toothaker introduced our winter grant recipients, who each thanked the club and let us know how they intended to use the grant funds, and folks volunteered to deliver dictionaries to 3rd graders. (If you’d like to help with dictionaries, please contact Cam Boyd). For our program, Lynna Broyles and Tom Kern each gave their classification talks – which were great. Lynna spoke of the values that led her to Steamboat Springs, her roots, family and career. Tom talked about his family, military service, career, and hobbies.
The board meets on Monday, February 11th at noon at Rex’s. Items on the agenda include credit cards as a payment mechanism, revamping club dues and fees, and tweaking the club’s scholarship program. Please join in the board’s discussion on these items.
