Ben Custer - Rotary Student of the Month for March 2013

Steamboat Springs Rotary club is honored to select Ben Custer as our Student of the Month for March.  Ben is a Senior at Steamboat Springs High School.  He is one of those unique students who gives his best in anything he is involved with.  Whether he is in a leadership position such as athletic captain or in the classroom, Ben consistently puts his best effort forward.  When you combine this with Ben’s positive attitude and dedication, you have a solid leader who inspires those around him to be better.  

To quote Luke DeWolfe, “One of Ben’s strongest character traits is his dedication and loyalty to anything he takes on.  After our football team was in the state championship game in 2009, they played the next two years without a win.  Many players quit or made excuses as to why they had lost.  Ben as a member of that team could have easily done the same.  He never did.  This year I spoke with Ben early on in the school year and asked him about the upcoming season.  He told me he and his teammates had worked hard and that they were going to be successful.  Currently the team is 3 and 3 and playing great.  As a leader of this team and an integral member on and off the field, I think this example speaks to Ben’s core values of hard work, determination and positive attitude.  I have known, taught and coached many students in my 12 years in the education profession.  It is my opinion that those with a solid character base, who have high expectations and standards always do well in terms of their achievements after leaving Steamboat Springs High School.  Ben exhibits these traits.  Ben has high expectations and goals for himself and those around him.  He is one of the most coachable players I have ever worked with.  He listens to criticism and works hard to improve and is honest and trustworthy.  He is dedicated and works hard in all facets of his life.  Ben makes good decisions and is not swayed by peer pressure.  These traits make Ben a natural role model and solid leader in the Steamboat Springs High School.”
