FOR THOSE ROTARIANS WHO MISSED THE TUESDAY, JANUARY 27, 2015 MEETING

                If you missed the Rotary Club Meeting on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, then you missed a most compelling and riveting Classification Talk by Julie Taulman. Julie was born in Deerfield, IL. We heard about Julie’s formative years there, her schooling and the development of her career as a Journalist.  There was an early and abiding connection developed between Julie and her parents with Steamboat. We learned about her marriage to Kevin and the birth of her sons, Jacob and Kyle. Kyle is the “pivot point” for the transformation of the Taulman family and Julie’s career from Journalism to Executive Director at STARS in Steamboat, as Kyle became a paraplegic due to cancer and ultimately lost his ability to use his legs. Julie’s story of the uncertainty and frustration in ascertaining what was medically happening to Kyle, tore at your heart. However, the Taulman Family conquered the adversity beset them with: strength, perseverance, and determination that Kyle would lead a normal life. Kyle and the Taulman Family prevailed. Thank you Julie for sharing your family’s inspirational and triumphant story with us.

                Steve Frasier served as our Greeter, and introduced our guests and visiting Rotarians. Thank you for your help, Steve. Our Thought for the Day, was delivered by Ian Engle who shared some notable quotes from some, historic people, not the least of which was one of my favorites, Will Rogers. Scott Marr handled Good News for us. Thank you, Scott.

                We celebrated the following Club membership anniversaries: Lynna Broyles, (3 years), Past Club  President, John Centner, (17 years), Bobby Davis, (1 year), Grant Fenton, (6 years), Todd Hayes, (4 years) and Ashley Kane, (5 years.)

                We inducted: “The best new members ever:” Scott Wither and Jonathan Bishop.  Thank you to Scott’s sponsors, Eric Rabesa and Brian Harvey and Jonathan’s sponsors, Ellen Kendall and Mike Forney. Welcome Jonathan and Scott, we are glad you are with us. As always, a big: “thank you” to Ellen and the Membership Committee for always bringing us such high quality new members.

                We received reports from Lynaia South on the District 5440 Exchange Student Ski Weekend in Steamboat. Thank you to Lynaia and the Committee. Everything I heard is that the Exchange Students had a great time. Kris Hammond reported on the Club and Interact Club’s trip to Agua Prieta, MX., for our Service Project there. The 13 participating members painted a school, distributed blankets, socks and other apparel items, soccer balls, coloring books and crayons at: three orphanages, in a poor neighborhood, as well as visiting a privately run home for the elderly. Partnering with our Rotarians in the Agua Prieta Rotary Club was a wonderful experience and we were treated like royalty by them. We invited them to Steamboat this summer.

                We recognized Chris Stillwell, for his unflagging efforts on the Community Holiday Tubing Party Committee with our coveted Rotarian of the Month award. Chris was literally everywhere during that event, “plugging holes” in coverage, “picking up the slack,” where the slack needed picking up, and being our all-around “utility infielder.” Congratulations and thank you Chris for a job well done. Your choice was unanimous.

                Still looking to form a Rotary team for the Healthcare Foundation’s “Penguin Plunge,” in March. We have fielded teams before for this very worthwhile community event and we should be represented again this year. Please let me know if you are interested.
