Following the Pledge and the Four Way Test, one visiting Rotarian and two guests were introduced. Thank you, Elissa Greene and Eric Rabesa, for welcoming our members and guests at our noon meeting. The Thought for the Day was about success and provided by Suzanne Brookshire, thank you Suzanne.
Meg Morse gave us a snapshot of her work at the Steamboat Mountain School and Loretta Conway let us know all that is happening, beyond just tennis, at the Tennis Center. Thank you both for agreeing to do the Steamboat Minute.
Jim Moylan, our Assistant District Governor, was on hand to present a Paul Harris Award to Todd Hayes. Thank you, Todd, for your generous contributions to the Rotary Foundation.
Announcements –
Michelle Freckleton reminded everyone of the Flower Barrel pick-up next Tuesday, Sept. 18th. No regular noon meeting, but please meet in the MEADOWS PARKING LOT between 4:30 – 5pm to assist with picking up flower barrels. BBQ dinner and beverages will follow at the Tennis Center, no running through the sprinklers this time.
Randy Rudasics and his PR team are working on the next newspaper insert and he was looking for 3 more sponsors interested in having their logo included in the piece. Cost is $93 and a few people stepped forward immediately to snatch up the opportunity. If you are interested, please contact Randy to see if there are any remaining openings.
Ashley announced that Interact is starting up this week and will meet every other Wednesday at 11:40 to 12:20 in Mrs. Hanson-Peters room. The next meeting is scheduled for September 26th.
Polio Eradication Update – there were no new cases of Wild Polio this week. The three remaining endemic countries are Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Year to date, Pakistan has reported 3 cases, Afghanistan, 12 cases and Nigeria, 0 cases for a total of 15 cases. In 2017, there were a total of 22 cases reported between Pakistan and Afghanistan, 0 in Nigeria. Remember, to consider the disease eradicated, we must go 3 years with 0 new Wild Polio cases. Our Rotary-wide 2018-2019 Rotary Year Polio Fundraising Goal is $50 million – to be matched $2 for $1 by the Gates Foundation.
Dr. Brian Harrington, Chairman of the Scholarship committee, announced the addition of a new scholarship opportunity that has become available due to the generosity of one of our members. Jim Grew has offered to donate $5000 each year for a scholarship in memory of his fiancé, Barbara Bolding, that passed away. He asked that the scholarship committee use the same criteria that they use for other Rotary Scholarships and that it be awarded to a female. Jim is keeping a scrapbook of the recipients of this scholarship and requests a picture and handwritten note from the winners. What a lovely way to honor Barbara and thank you Jim, for allowing our Rotary Club to partner with you.
Recap on Monday’s Board Meeting –
We accepted three resignations – Marion Kahn, Lisa Popovich and Erik Griepentrog. We will miss them, but unfortunately all three had personal and/or business conflicts come up that prevented them from participating in our Club on a regular basis. We hope when their schedules allow, they will consider joining us again.
A leave of absence was approved for Kristal Eckley for the months of October, November and December. You will continue to receive her weekly updates for meetings and speakers, thank you Kristal.
Steve Sehnert is working on the design for a new Club banner. He presented some initial ideas and will continue to work on additional options. Input will be appreciated, please contact him if you have ideas.
Two new Committee Chairs have stepped up to help – Tara Weaver will be the new Chair for the Grants Committee and Lindsey Simbeye will be taking on Flower Barrels. Thank you both for taking on the new challenges.
Lori was looking for new sites to hold the Vocation Rotation on October 30th, however, since the Board met, we decided to delay that program for a few weeks. Instead we will be hearing from our new Exchange Students.
Susie gave us an update on the Barn Dance and Randy on the insert to the newspaper.
Domestic Violence awareness month is October and with the number of projects we are in the midst of, we felt it best to delay work on a project/event around this subject. Carol is looking for some folks to jump in and help out with a project/event at a later date. Please contact her if you have interest.
Our program was ALL ABOUT THE BARN DANCE! Fun presentation of the raffle prizes, which are awesome as always, and a thank you to the sponsors. Tickets are for sale for the event and for the raffle prizes. They will be available at Flower Barrel pick-up next week or contact Susie, Ashley or any of the committee members to get some. I hope all of you are planning on attending!
