October 2012 Board Report

At the October board meeting, the board approved the final 2011-2012 year financials, which were in the black and resulted in a slight addition to the club’s reserve funds.  Randy Rudasics reported that the PR committee was wrapping up the next insert.  Jane Denning reported that Ellen Kendall was going to join her as co-chair of the membership committee and that the committee was working with three potential new members.  Paul Hebert secured the board’s approval to sponsor a grant for the Anajoli School in Kenya to both the district and Rotary International in support of a project to provide water to the school.  Greg Stetman reported on the Fundraising Analysis Committee’s work, and the board had a lively discussion regarding whether or not the club should continue to have a required ticket purchase policy.  The committee will present their recommendations to the club in December.  Mark Anderson provided information about the club’s endowment funds at the Yampa Valley Community Foundation.  The Don Lufkin Rotary Endowment Funds has the club’s executive committee as the donor advisor and the fund exists solely to provide quarterly funding to Lift Up.  The Steamboat Springs Rotary Endowment Fund – known within the club as the “Jack Black” fund has the ability to provide grants to nonprofits, government and other qualified charitable organizations.  It does not have the ability to fund scholarships.  This information stirred the board’s discussion about how, twenty years from now, with the current set up we could be funding 60K+ in grants while only funding $10K in scholarships – as this felt lopsided, the board decided to look at the potential of starting an endowment fund to fund scholarships.
